SUNDAY MORNING - THE DAY AFTER - 9/7/08

Some of us gathered at the Lake Breeze Lodge on Sunday morning - the day after. We enjoyed a great breakfast and said our goodbyes to each other. We read the wonderful article about the Golf Tournament and Reunion in the New Braunfels paper. The REUNION was a success! Seeing old friends we thought we lost --- priceless! So long until the next time.

REUNION 2008 - 60's Classes

Reunion 2008!!!
What started out to be a reunion of the first three graduating classes in 1975 (which commemorated the 10 year anniversary for the Class of '65) was turned into a large gathering of Ro-Hawks of the Classes graduating in the '60's thirty-three years later. This year is the 40th anniversary of the graduation of the Class of '63 and the 40th year of Randolph High School. Some of you remember when the school was born in PS-104 - Base Barracks .... A few months later, the new building on the other side of the south runway was dedicated and we moved in to the new building. We were impressed! We were small and things were good. We got to creating havoc on the new teachers who were unimpressed with our fathers' ranks. I came on base during the summer of 1963 and started RHS for my Junior year. I had already attended 7 schools and this was just one more. I was reacquainted with my friends from my days at Schertz-Cibolo Jr. High School and Schertz High School and my friends from my previous school in Virginia (Lee High). Most everyone knew someone from a previous tour of duty. My father was on his 4th tour at Randolph!! This is why I consider Texas my home (even tho I was born at Barksdale AFB, Louisiana) - we just kept coming back! I was pretty shy in school and found it hard to make friends but I did have friends that I was already writing to from prior tours - I feel very lucky to still be writing to a girlfriend I met in third grade in Waco. After 50 years we still write and email. But I digress.

On Friday, September 5, 2008 about 70 RoHawks decended on the high school for a reception in the Cafeteria hosted by the school's principal, Bruce Cannon (1970 Grad of RHS). We were invited to walk around the halls of the school. We had soda, water, veggies and small sandwiches. We first met each other with surprised looks and then hugs and we wanted to talk all night. Then about 7:15 we walked out to the field for the start of the football game. We found a section reserved for the '60's grads. There we found some other RoHawks there were not in the Cafeteria. More hugs and chatter and picture taking.

There was Mrs. Walker (guidance counselor from the '60's). She's remarried now to Craig Allen.

Coach Albrecht, one of the first coaches at Randolph High was also there. Coach also taught at the Elementary School on base so he has a long history as well.

Personally, I didn't watch the football game but there are pictures of the game that someone took and sent to me. We all remarked on the long skirts of the pep squad members and hey, there's a guy cheerleader!!!

There were more people there than I could talk with or take pictures of so I'm so glad that most everyone brought their cameras.

Also, on Friday night some of the "girls" went to the Lindley's house and helped prepare the food such as cutting up the vegetables and fruits.

Later, after the game some of us made the trek up to Lake McQueeney to Lake Breeze Ski Lodge to visit the bar and listen to some good rock & roll (hosted by Jackie Greene Muir). I wonder why I didn't get any pictures from that part of the night?

The next morning, Saturday, September 6th, found about 20 of the guys playing golf at Landa Park in New Braunfels.

So, 20 guys played golf and 150 others had to find something to do with their time until the party in the evening. Some of the guests went to Lake McQueeney and enjoyed the pool, boating and just relaxing.

Finally, that evening approximately 170 RHS grads arrived at Jeff and Marty Lindley's home on Lake Dunlap just west of Lake McQueeney. We renewed old friendships and met new people who graduated later than they did. We dined on BBQ and drank beer and wine and sodas. Listened to music played by Russ Cornell and Chuck Pechuls ('64). But mostly talked and took pictures. Door prizes were given out (RoHawk Alumni T-shirts and hats). The last person (me) left around midnight. Early compared to the last reunions..... Sunday morning found about 40 RoHawks back at Lake McQueeney having breakfast and reading the New Braunfels newspaper with the article about the reunion.

I personally want to thank everyone who came to this event... I have received such sweet notes and emails from some of you in appreciation to me and to Marty and Jeff Lindley. Certainly, Marty and Jeff didn't realize that so many people would be interested in coming to a Reunion. I'm sure they didn't expect over 170 RoHawks in their back-yard. When it looked like we were going to go over 125 --- I think their knees started shaking!!! But everything turned out wonderful. I think Marty did a FABULOUS job and nothing can compare to the care and concern she had for every detail just like she was entertaining her own friends. We owe her our many thanks and love for letting us overrun her home. Jeff --- well, I'm learning that he just rolls with the punches. I so enjoyed getting to know you both and I'm hoping that we continue our friendship.

There has been some talk about having another Reunion in 5 years. That would be the 50th anniversary of the school. Please keep in touch with me and perhaps we can all meet again at that time ... As someone wrote me - we should all look pretty scary by then!!!

Thank you all and keep sending me emails and pictures to post on the blog. To those who couldn't come for whatever reason - we missed you!!!

With love and Peace, Gloria Campbell Gallagher '65

MASSIVE RO-HAWK REUNION

The Herald-Zeitung
Ro-Hawks reunion held in New Braunfels
By Mark Koopmans
The Herald-Zeitung
Published September 7, 2008
NEW BRAUNFELS — About 170 former graduates of Randolph Air Force Base High School — the Ro-Hawks — swooped into town for a special “Come Home to Texas” reunion. The weekend event was in part, hosted by New Braunfels residents, Jeff Lindley (class of ‘66) and his wife, Marty who arranged a Texas-style barbecue for old friends who had traveled from as far away as the Virgin Islands to attend. However, Jeff Lindley said that what started as a planned reunion for about 50 or 60 people quickly turned into a mass reunion for the classes of 1963 through 1969 — and even one person from the class of 1970. And for some who met at the reunion’s first event — the Ro-Hawk football game Friday evening — it was the first time they had seen old schoolmates in more than four decades. “We’re a bunch of guys — and gals — all of us were military brats, but we had the pleasure of going to the same, small high school,” Lindley said, as he joined several dozen Ro-Hawk alumni for an informal golf tournament at the Landa Park Golf Course Saturday morning. “In the past, we’ve tried to organize our reunions every five years or so, but for whatever reason, this is the first big reunion in the last 10 to 15 years,” he said. “Starting with the football game last night — which we won — and finishing with a brunch on Sunday, we’ve got a lot going on, and it’s taken about a year to get everything organized.”
Another former student, Gloria Campbell Gallagher, class of '65, took on much of the challenge of organizing the three-day event, and even created an online blog to keep the other Ro-Hawks up to date. “That’s how I heard about it — from the blog,” said Jim Ramsey, class of ‘68, and director of sales for Sherwin Williams in his hometown of Cleveland, Ohio. “This is my first reunion, and it’s been great catching up with some of the guys. I remember their names, I just gotta figure out if I can recognize the faces.” As military sons and daughters of the Greatest Generation, many went on to follow in their parent’s footsteps, including one who remains on active duty. “Unfortunately, he can’t be here today, but Whizzy Broome is the current Chaplain of the Pentagon,” Lindley said. “Whizzy was notorious in his day, as were many of us, but he’s only one of many, many graduates who went on to have successful careers as attorneys, police officers and doctors, including Dr. Gary Bird, here in New Braunfels.”
Helping with the controlled chaos during a mini-reunion of sorts at the golf course was Tom Madsen of Austin.“This is the chance to get a bunch of over 60-year-olds together, so we can have a good time and see if we still can recognize each other,” Madsen said. “Playing golf is an easy way for us to do that. Ask the guy over there in the middle of all the golf carts, he’s just a kid.”The “kid” in question was 56-year-old Terry Fox, also of Austin, who said it was “fun catching up with a bunch of military kids who were all spread out all over the world.” “It seems like this might be the last time that so many of us will be able to get together and enjoy each other’s company,” Fox said. “I’m definitely planning on attending the next reunion if I’m still alive, but if it takes another 40 years, I don’t know.” Jeff Lindley, who was keeping an eye out for “wobblers” — “if they’re old and wobbling into the club house, I know they’re one of us” — also was putting the finishing touches to an informal speech he wrote for the barbecue party. “Apart from the usual stuff, I plan to bring to everyone’s attention the something that is missing from many of the guys,” he said. “Hair.”

RO-HAWK REUNION WEEKEND - SEPTEMBER 5-6-7, 2008

RO-HAWK REUNION WEEKEND - SEPTEMBER 5/6/7 --- 2008

PLEASE PRINT THIS OUT AND PUT IT SOMEWHERE SAFE AND ACCESSIBLE!!!! IT WILL SELF-DESTRUCT AT SOME POINT... and not be repeated too many more times.

TEN MORE DAYS UNTIL THE REUNION!!! We have an amazing turnout - we have over 150 people signed up for the Saturday nite dinner and reunion at Jeff and Marty's in New Braunfels. (Yes, we have ordered extra porta pottys).

We have almost that many attending the school tour and the game. Remember that the school is only accessed from the gate off Loop 1604. Bruce Cannon - RHS graduate and school principal is hosting a reception and tour for us starting at 4:30 Friday afternoon. The football game starts at 7:30 pm. An announcement will be made introducing our attendance at the game --- We can stay and watch the game and mingle and talk or leave and go home to sleep or go to Lake McQueeney and relive our youth and rock and roll.

Then on to Lake Breeze Ski Lodge at Lake McQueeney Friday nite where Jackie Greene Muir has set up a band for our enjoyment - her treat to all of us. The band starts at 8pm and plays until midnight. No cover charge - just when you enter the Lodge you will need to go to the "window cashier" and set up your cash tickets (under your names & RAFB high school - those who are registered in rooms will be billed to your room numbers) for food and drinks, ski pulls, etc. There will also be a pontoon boat available for 2 boat tours around the Lake. The Ski Lodge is located at 225 Ski Lodge Road, McQueeney, TX 78123. You take Exit 188 off of north I-35 and go east .... past the dog-leg in the road until you turn left on Ski Lodge Road. You'll run into the lodge if you go straight.

Golfers should get to bed early 'cause Jeff and Tom have organized a golf tourney (Jeff has christened it a "Golfers Gala") at Landa Golf Course in New Braunfels - See attached.... Tee time - 10:00 a.m. If you want to join the golfing please contact Jeff at 830-608-5000.

Those who won't be golfing can either sleep - or go to the mall, outlet mall, get your hair and nails done, get a massage - because you were up too late Friday nite for your age --- or go back to lake McQueeney where there will be Ski Boats available for renting or just sit by the pool. Jackie will be there to help you arrange things. Don't stay out in the sun too long (let's HOPE it's sunny) because you have a big night tonight!

There may also be boats provided by Mike Berish and others and a pontoon boat available for use at the Lindleys at Lake Dunlap.

THE BIG EVENT ----

DINNER AND GET TOGETHER AT THE LINDLEY'S HOUSE, LAKE DUNLAP starting at 5:00 pm. BBQ dinner at 7:00 - music, food and fun. The address for Jeff and Marty Lindley is 827 Schumann's Beach Road, Lake Dunlap, New Braunfels, TX -- Take Exit 187 off of North I-35 and go East to Schumann's Beach Road (somehow we will have it marked) and turn left. Go straight - around big tree in middle of the road - and turn left at the big field and park. House is behind the field. You can't miss it. Telephone numbers: 830-608-5000 and 830-708-5200.

IF WE ARE STILL UPRIGHT ON SUNDAY MORNING - we are invited to go back to the Ski Lodge for breakfast at 8:30 - pick from the menu. Otherwise, you are free to meet anywhere with anyone and enjoy the last remaining moments of your weekend before you have to catch your plane back home.

IF YOU STILL HAVE QUESTIONS - PLEASE FEEL FREE TO CALL GLORIA AT 830-822-0065 (CELL) OR 830-626-0942 (HM).

PLEASE NOTE:

We need camera-persons - I can't be everywhere (really) - so if you have a camera and you like to use it - please bring it. Take pictures and email them to Gloria after the reunion (no porn please) and I will post them on the BLOG as they come to me. (If you buy a disposable camera and want to donate it to the BLOG I'll be glad to get it processed on a CD and send it to you after I check the pictures for posting). Please don't be shy about posing for pictures either - be bold and confident. Who cares if it rains and your hair frizzes! Or if you are sunburned and you have raccoon eyes from wearing your sunglasses! We are making memories here people!!! WE ARE RO-HAWKS - BE PROUD. LET'S HAVE SOME FUN!

AND LOTS OF OTHER PEOPLE - I GUESS WE NEED OUR OWN BLEECHERS!!!

The football game starts at 7:30 pm. Hopefully, enough of us will get there so we can save some space for all of us to sit with each other. Wear something to identify yourself so we will recognize you as "one of us". We are supposed to be recognized during the half time in some way. It may just be announced over the intercom that we are in the stands. Then if we are still awake after the game we can head over to Lake McQueeney for a dance. I will try to have maps printed out to hand out at the game. I'm trying to prepare some kind of map to copy to put on the blog to the Lodge and also to Marty and Jeff's house.

DANCE AFTER THE GAME FRIDAY NITE: Jackie Greene Muir has offered us an invitation to a dance that will be going on at the Ski Lodge at Lake McQueeney on Friday nite after the game (if you go to the football game at the school). She thought we all might be interested in coming. Here is the information she sent me about the dance. This is not included in any of the other Reunion events we already have scheduled and you must contact Jackie to RSVP. I asked her if anyone could come at the spur of the minute and she said to see "Buzz" at the Lodge when you get there to arrange a "cash ticket". Of course, all of Jackie's information is listed below - call her for directions too:

Gloria, please add to your blog site, dance Friday night at Ski Lodge!!! No band at Lodge for Saturday. I will need an RSVP for dance, boat rides & skiing on Lake McQueeney at Lake Breeze Ski Lodge, please use my email, jmuir@satx.rr.com

SPUR OF THE MINUTE GUESTS..... That would be fine for them to come…They must talk to Buzz to set up cash ticket when they come in…I just wanted to give Buzz a list to provide the quests with their temporary charge #.to make things easier for him..but they can pay cash tooooo I can be reached mbl# (210)861-4236 JACKIE GREENE MUIR

HOTELS IN THE AREA IF YOU ARE STILL LOOKING: Here are the hotels in the immediate area of the reunion. These hotels are located in New Braunfels on I-35. I have no clue if they are any good but most of them are new.

LaQuinta is located on 46 on the East side of I-35. On the other side of the highway there is a Holiday Inn. The new ones are Comfort Suites, Best Western and Quality Inn... there is also a Roadway Inn and a Motel 6 and a Days Inn. Go to this web site and it might be helpful. http://travel.yahoo.com/p-travelguide-479695-new_braunfels_vacations-i;_ylt=AqRKKnUsK61tfc5cWP3d_HGhpYMA

Also, This page of the BLOG - the reunion page and you can see the invitation with all the activities listed.... but basically - we can tour the school on Friday evening before the football game. I have talked with the owner of Lake Breeze Ski Lodge, Lake McQueeney.MEMBERS ONLY. He still has rooms available for 9/5-9/7…. Houston scoops them up!!!! The rooms are basic 2double beds, $105night. Hope this helps..Anything else? Planning for this must be done ASAP, New Braunfels & McQueeney are destination resort areas & the snow birds love us as well as Houston. Rooms are booked well in advance.
CORRECTION ON INVITES: When booking rooms at Lake Breeze Ski Lodge, must ask for the owners: Buzz or Kipp Mueller…(They are the only one’s handling bookings) & refer to Jackie Greene Muir, RAFB HS Reunion…this place is definitely not a hotel, it is a lodge!!!

2008 REUNION - September 5th and 6th

THE VOTES ARE IN

SAVE THE DATES

September 5th and 6th

2008 ROHAWK REUNION

THE '60's CLASSES
(or Whatever)

September 5th - visit the school and attend a RoHawk football game
September 6th - golf and whatever during the day and PARTY IN THE EVENING
September 7th - ????

I received this note from Marty Lindley (wife of Jeff Lindley '66):

"We would love to host the reunion this year at our home on Lake Dunlap, in New Braunfels. BBQ, music, libations, lots of things to do at our home... boating, canoeing, fishing, swimming, volleyball, yard games, baseball, horse shoes, etc... and close by is golfing, shopping, Schlitterbahn Water Park, Gruene Historic District, tubing on the Comal River... great family vacation time... we could make it a several day event.

Parking is not a problem and we can accommodate a lot of people... lots of bathrooms.

Anyway, I would enjoy helping you plan the event and make it really special and memorable. Have worked on several major events in New Braunfels... so would be great to use years of accumulated resources in helping you get the Randolph group together again. Wewer and Kathy said they will come and I know they would love to help... and the guys I'm sure will want to help also... right? Madsen, Monahan, Coggins, Pitzer, Norton, Donaldson, Lindley.. all in the name of golf. "

Marty and Jeff Lindley ('66)
